Doomba groaned; his poor hounds, surely they could’ve spared more. He hated those Knights. Why’d they always succeed and survive, why couldn’t he beat them? He wanted to rip them apart. He inhaled, trying to calm down.

Nothing was good enough. They were surrounded, yet they’d gotten away. There was no way to surprise and kill them without their Swords. Although if they traveled towards Coe Kiki, perhaps there was a means, but could he trust Lord Crow?

The man sent a message to Fobata and Goga, warning them about the Knights without telling them who they were. How could he know that, yet hadn’t given them enough information, and nothing to Doomba?

It didn’t sound like him, unless he hadn’t known everything either, or he’d been hiding something, but what? Should he trust Lord Crow, or turn to another source? But this was his best, only option right now.

If Lord Crow was still loyal, perhaps he should take advantage of it. He’d been a good ally, and might destroy the Knights before they went further. But if he was disloyal, at least Doomba would know for certain. It might be risky, but Doomba was willing to chance it.

Far from the Wastelands, Lord Crow sat back, sipping coffee as he read, when he received a telepathic message from Doomba: What do you know about the Knights of Arria?

Lord Crow gasped, startled by Doomba in his mind. He dropped the cup, which cracked and spilled all over. Lord Crow grimaced at the shards and stain.

“I know nothing, my lord, aside from stories.” He addressed Doomba out loud, though in a quiet voice.

Lord Crow didn’t know how to send a telepathic message back. Though Doomba might be able to hear his thoughts, it still felt better to address him as if he was sitting in the same room. That way, Lord Crow didn’t feel completely insane.

You’ve heard nothing? Doomba asked.

“Nothing, my lord, I swear.” He shook his head. “Why’d you ask?” Could the Knights of Arria have returned?

They were at Coe Aela. I received a message from Fobata that you’d warned him of travelers, but not that they were Knights. He was unprepared!

“I didn’t know who they were, just that they threatened him. I’d no idea what kind of threat. I’d received a foretelling from the Oracle of Tau. I ask the Oracle for one each month, and that particular month, I got one for Fobata. I suppose the Oracle knew I was a relative involved in his affairs. I didn’t know the danger. Please forgive me for not telling you sooner.”

Doomba was silent, and then said, All right, I believe you. But don’t neglect to tell me again of any threat that might affect another Follower, and me in turn. By the way, the Knights of Arria are coming to your city. They should be there soon. Don’t neglect your duty.

“I won’t, I swear.” Lord Crow bowed his head, relieved when he felt Doomba abandoning his mind.

One of the strangest encounters he’d ever had, and that was saying something.
